Issue for June 18, 1964 (Regional ed.; date on p.1: June 20, 1964) is a special dedication issue, and is devoted entirely to UC Irvine and its opening. It includes interviews with Daniel G. Aldrich and Clark Kerr, and an article by William L. Pereira. The issue also includes articles on Aldrich, Ivan Hinderaker, L.E. Cox, Richard Balch, the planning of the university, the main library, campus sports, and campus designers and builders, as well as a list of facts about UC Irvine, a dedication ceremony program, and brief biographies of faculty. Issue for June 22, 1964 (Newport Harbor ed.) includes 3 articles covering UC Irvine's dedication ceremony, 2 of which focus on Lyndon B. Johnson's participation. Issue for Oct 4, 1965 (Regional ed.) is devoted entirely to UC Irvine and includes articles on student experience, student government, academic planning, campus sports, campus buildings, and computers and real-time enrollment. Also included are excerpts from Daniel G. Aldrich's and Lyndon B. Johnson's speeches at the college's dedication ceremony, brief biographical entries for faculty members, and a list of students. Issue for Oct. 4, 1965 (Newport Harbor ed.) includes articles on the first classes held at UC Irvine, Daniel G. Aldrich, and research at the college.

Clark Kerr was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on May 17, 1911 to Samuel W. and Caroline (Clark) Kerr. He married Catherine (Kitty) Spaulding in Los Angeles, California in 1934, and they had three children: Clark Edgar, Alexander William, and Caroline Mary. Kerr died in 2003, in El Cerrito, California, shortly after completing his memoirs, The Gold and the Blue: A Personal Memoir of the University of California, 1949-1967.
